CDF Freedom Schools What are CDF Freedom Schools? The CDF Freedom Schools program is a literacy-rich summer and after-school program that serves children in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is rare, cost prohibitive or non-existent. Modeled after the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project, CDF Freedom Schools programs train college-age young adults to work with children ages 5-18 through an integrated curriculum for reading and cultural enrichment, youth leadership development, parental empowerment, civic engagement and social action. Since 1995, more than 40,000 children, 4,500 college students, 1,900 high school students and 550 site coordinators and project directors have had an empowering CDF Freedom Schools experience! What is the CDF Freedom Schools Katrina Project? Beginning in November 2005, the CDF Freedom Schools program will facilitate partnerships between public school districts, churches, community based organizations, colleges and other partners in the Jackson metropolitan area to provide 12 weeks of after-school programming serving 700 children who are Hurricane Katrina or Rita survivors, and provide employment through stipends and support for 77 college student many of whom are survivors of Hurricanes Katrina or Rita who will be “ServaIf you are a college student survivor of Hurricanes Katrina or Rita and you’re looking for work study employment opportunity while boosting children’s motivation to read, generating positive attitudes toward learning, and connecting the needs of children and families to the resources of the community, you could serve as a CDF Freedom Schools Servant Leader Intern!nt Leader Interns.” How can you become a Servant Leader Intern?
